FDA Approves Botox Cosmetic for Treating Moderate to Severe Platysma Bands in Adults

FDA Approves Botox Cosmetic for Treating Moderate to Severe Platysma Bands

The FDA has recently approved Botox Cosmetic for the temporary improvement of moderate to severe vertical bands connecting the jaw and neck, also known as platysma bands. This approval marks a significant milestone, making Botox a product with four aesthetic indications: forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and now platysma bands. This development represents a broader approach to aesthetic treatments, extending beyond facial lines to address the neck and jawline.

Platysma bands, which occur when the thin platysma muscle contracts, can create a less defined jawline and an aged appearance. Previously, treatment options for this issue were limited, leaving patients with few non-surgical solutions. With the new approval, Botox offers a minimally invasive, injectable option to temporarily improve the appearance of these vertical bands. By targeting the muscle activity that causes the bands, Botox smooths the appearance of the neck and improves jawline definition.

The treatment involves injecting along the jawline and neck with doses of 26, 31, or 36 units of Botox, depending on the severity of the bands. This treatment provides an alternative for patients seeking to enhance their neck and jawline without surgery.

Clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of Botox for platysma bands, with significant improvements reported by both investigators and patients. In these studies, more than 60% of participants expressed satisfaction with the appearance of their neck and jawline just 14 days after treatment.

This new indication expands the options available for patients looking to achieve comprehensive aesthetic goals. Individuals interested in this treatment should consult a licensed aesthetic provider at Seaport Medspa to discuss if it is suitable for their needs.
