Lip filler has become one of the most sought-after aesthetic treatments — but at Seaport Medspa, our approach is far from “one size fits all.” Every lip we treat is designed to look natural, balanced, and harmonious with your facial features. We don’t chase trends or overfill; instead, we focus on enhancing your lips in a way that fits your anatomy and goals.
This guide will walk you through the products we use, how we select the right filler for you, what a syringe really looks like, and what to expect before and after treatment.
Our Lip Filler Philosophy: Natural, Balanced, You
When lip filler is done correctly, it’s almost undetectable to others — you’ll look refreshed and more defined, but never “overdone.” Our aesthetic medical providers consider your facial proportions, lip shape, skin elasticity, and age when determining how much filler to use and where to place it.
Rather than creating the same look for everyone, we tailor your treatment to your anatomy. Some patients want a subtle hydration boost, others want more structure or a gentle increase in volume — and your treatment plan reflects that.
The Fillers We Use and Why
We offer several FDA-approved dermal fillers from the Restylane and Juvederm families, each with unique properties that make them ideal for specific lip goals:
Restylane Kysse – Designed specifically for lips, Kysse uses XpresHAn technology for natural movement and softness. Great for volume and flexibility, making it ideal for patients who want fuller lips that still feel completely natural.
Restylane-L – A versatile option for subtle volume and definition. It provides smooth results and is a great choice for first-time lip filler patients who want a conservative enhancement.
Restylane Refyne – Flexible and soft, perfect for enhancing lips with fine lines around the mouth. Often used for patients who want a smoother, more youthful appearance without significant volume.
Juvederm Ultra – Offers more dramatic plumping power. A good choice for patients seeking noticeable volume while still maintaining a soft, smooth look.
Juvederm Volbella – Ultra-fine for subtle enhancement and lip line definition. Great for addressing vertical lip lines and adding a light, hydrated look rather than fullness.
Why this matters: The “best” filler depends on your goals, your lip structure, and your provider’s assessment. We’ll guide you toward the product that gives you the most natural and flattering result.
How Much is in One Syringe? (The Blueberry Analogy)
A common concern we hear is: “Will one syringe be too much?” The truth might surprise you.
One syringe of filler is only 1 mL of product — roughly the size of a blueberry.
When you picture it this way, it’s easy to see why one syringe won’t make your lips look unnatural. In many cases, especially for first-time patients, one syringe is the perfect amount for enhancing shape and volume while keeping your lips balanced with the rest of your features.
We can also use less than a full syringe depending on your goals. Some patients already have filler and simply want a slight enhancement, while others prefer a very conservative approach to start. Your treatment plan is always personalized, so you never get more than you’re comfortable with.
What to Expect: Pre- and Post-Care
Before Your Appointment
A little preparation can help you get the best results and minimize side effects. Here’s what to keep in mind:
Plan Ahead for Special Events: Schedule lip filler at least 4 weeks before weddings, photoshoots, or other important events.
Feeling Unwell? If you have a cold, cold sore, blemish, or rash near the treatment area, we’ll need to reschedule. You should be symptom-free and off antibiotics for at least 2 weeks before treatment.
Medical Conditions: Let us know if you have an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medications — you may need clearance from your physician.
Dental Work: Avoid filler for 2 weeks before and after dental cleanings or minor dental work, and 4 weeks before or after major oral surgery.
Vaccinations: No vaccinations of any kind for 2 weeks before or after your treatment.
Air Travel: We recommend avoiding flying for 5 days after filler — plan your appointment accordingly.
Minimize Bruising Risk: For up to 1 week before your visit, try to avoid alcohol, NSAIDs (if safe for you), and fish oil supplements.
Cold Sores: If you’re prone to cold sores, we may recommend pretreating with an antiviral like valacyclovir. Let us know if you need a prescription.
After Your Appointment
It’s normal to have some swelling and tenderness — these tips will help you heal smoothly:
Tenderness & Firmness: You may feel mild tenderness or firmness in the lips for several days. This will soften as the filler integrates with your tissue.
Swelling: Temporary swelling is common and usually improves within a few days.
Hands Off: Avoid rubbing or massaging your lips for the first 24 hours unless instructed by your provider.
Skip the Gym: Avoid strenuous exercise for 48 hours to reduce swelling and bruising.
No Facials or Lasers: Wait 2 weeks before having any facial treatments or laser procedures.
Hold Off on Flying: Avoid air travel for 5 days after filler.
No Dental Work: Wait 2 weeks before routine dental cleanings or minor dental work, and 4 weeks for major dental procedures or oral surgery.
No Vaccinations: Avoid vaccines for 2 weeks after treatment.
